2002 Nightgaine
Night-A-Gaine 2002, Mt Ainslie/Majura - 23 February 2002
Organiser's Report - The ACTRA’s third night event, held on Saturday 23 February 2002, saw a change in venue to Mt Ainslie/Mt Majura, and a change in course setter to Ian Booth. 64 people in 28 teams (nearly twice the number of competitors in the previous night event) moved off into the near darkness at 8.00pm . Three hours, 55 minutes later, David Baldwin & Iacopo Soldaini returned with a completely filled control card (1340 points) to win from Graham Turner & Pam James (1260 ) and Keith Conley & Brian Hart with (1230). A special mention also to Anna Booth, who competed well (eclipsing her husband’s later effort in the Paddy Pallin), despite having spent all day course setting at Honeysuckle Creek.
The course presented many options, catering for the less experienced teams while still being challenging for more experienced rogainers. Most teams tackled the southern area of the map, around Mt Ainslie. The more adventurous teams also went further north to Mt Majura.
As an experiment, and to keep down costs, the event organizers decided to cater for the event themselves. A flying visit to the Belconnen Cheesecake shop late on Saturday afternoon resulted in competitors being faced with an over abundance of rich food at midnight. David Baldwin wanted milo and bread instead , but was sadly disappointed.
Thanks to Ian Booth for setting a great course, and thanks to Ian, Adrian Sheppard, Jenny Hawkins and Judy Jenkinson for their help with the event admin and setting up the tent. Finally, thanks to all competitors for coming.
Glenn Bridgart & Lyndall Adam
... and from the Course Setter himself: As setter, it was particularly satisfying that just one team cleaned the course and with just a few minutes to spare - great effort from Dave Baldwin and partner; also from Graham "Turbo" Turner and Pam James who weren't far away in second. All teams seemed to enjoyed the concept and convenient yet still challenging area, made possible by Bob Allison's new map. Hopefully Glenn, Lyndall and I succeeded in putting on a good standard fun event with minimal hassle and cost to all.
